The 1935A $1 Hawaii Emergency Issue is one of the most iconic World War II-era notes, issued by the U.S. Treasury as a precautionary measure. This special $1 Silver Certificate was created to safeguard U.S. currency in case of a Japanese invasion of Hawaii.
The note stands out with its bold “HAWAII” overprint on the front, designed to distinguish it from regular U.S. currency. This marking ensured that if enemy forces seized Hawaii, the U.S. could swiftly recall and replace the overprinted notes, preventing their misuse.
The obverse features a portrait of George Washington, accompanied by the Treasury Seal and serial number. The reverse displays the familiar large "ONE" and intricate security designs typical of the 1935A Silver Certificates.
