Description

REPLACEMENT NOTE! Military Payment Certificates (MPCs) were a type of currency used to pay U.S. military personnel overseas from 1946 to 1973. They were issued to prevent inflation of local currencies and were used for transactions on military bases, especially during the Vietnam War. MPCs came in denominations from five cents to $20 and featured regularly updated designs to deter black market activity. The first two digits of each series indicated the year of issue. Used by military personnel in 22 countries, MPCs could be exchanged for local currency, but local currency could not be converted back into MPCs. The Bureau of Engraving and Printing produced them for the U.S. Department of Defense.
