Printed by ABNCo for the state of Mississippi likely just months—or even weeks—before the start of the Civil War, these notes carried a substantial 10% interest rate. As a result, they were recalled early, with all interest payments suspended as of December 5, 1863. This particular example, issued in early 1862 and redeemable on June 1, 1863, features vignettes of a woman writing on a scroll with a child at her feet on the left, enslaved individuals working in cotton fields at center, and a portrait of state treasurer M. D. Haynes. It also includes a red C - 100 - C protector and shows evidence of previous mounting.
