One of only six $5 Brown Backs known from this desirable Providence bank, which ceased operations in 1906.National Bank Notes, issued between 1863 and 1935, were circulated by privately owned banks that operated under a federal charter as "national banks." Backed by U.S. bonds purchased by these banks, the notes carried the U.S. Treasury Seal and shared standardized designs. However, each note was uniquely identified by the issuing bank’s name, charter number, and the signatures of its officials. This particular Series 1882 $5 "brown back" note prominently displays the bank’s charter number on its brown-ink reverse. The front features a portrait of President James Garfield alongside a brown Treasury Seal.
