Printed in the final years of large-size notes, the rare and distinctive “Poker Chip” is ranked #46 in 100 Greatest American Currency Notes by Q. David Bowers and David M. Sundman. It features a portrait of Andrew Jackson engraved by Alfred Sealey, based on a painting by Thomas Sully, alongside a red scalloped Treasury Seal and Roman numeral X denomination.
Its nickname comes from the reverse design, where two denomination counters resemble poker chips—drawing more attention than the central value. Reflecting a broader trend of minimalistic design in the era, much of the reverse is intentionally left blank.
Of the 696,000 printed, fewer than 700 are known to survive today, with only about 100 in Uncirculated condition—making it highly prized among collectors.
